Those who suffer lower back pain are usually prescribed bed rest to relieve their aching joints and bones. However, recent research has suggested that just bed rest is not going to provide complete relief from sciatica pain.

Staying active is beneficial for those who suffer back pain. This doesn’t mean the individual should participate in an extreme activity, but it means being up and mobile for periods of time that will help to ease the pain they have. In some cases, simply walking a few times a day will be enough.

Another effective method for reducing sciatica pain is by taking non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs, such as codeine and ibuprofen. In some cases, cortisone-based drugs may be injected into the space near the spinal column. This is a procedure that is similar to the epidural that is used when a woman is giving birth. It is important to note that this type of treatment may provide temporary relief, but it doesn’t address the root of the issue and it is something that will have to be done time and time again to provide any on-going relief.

In addition to the treatments listed here, research is developing more options for relief from sciatica pain. For example, now a treatment that involves stem cell for knees is being used with great success. If a person is suffering from this type of pain, they should consult with their doctor to make sure they choose the right treatment option.
